A while back I saw a gap that was missing with helping my students. I could see that many of them had progressed and would benefit by playing in a group but there were very little opportunities for them out there. I had been involved in a similar project before but it was limited and I wanted to take it to the next level. I started School of Rock Southwest on June the 28th 2014 with a single session of 3 bands. It turned out to be a huge success and in two months we needed to expand. We were excited to secure a brilliant music space at dBs Music at Cornwall College with 4 marvellous practice rooms. On board came Phil Matthews, a great friend and passionate tutor with a brilliant sense of rhythm and musical experience. After 6 months it was evident that we needed another tutor so we were joined by Mark Henson, a wonderfully talented guitarist who is able to help our members grasp playing in a band.

We now run four sessions every Saturday as follows:

  1. 9.30 a.m. – 11.00 a.m.
  2. 11.00 a.m. – 12.30 p.m.
  3. 12.30 p.m. – 2.00 p.m.
  4. 14.00 p.m. – 15.30 p.m.

(Only £5 per member per session!)

Our first concert was a huge success. People were stunned at how good the bands were playing and we had great coverage in the local press. We have also played at Heartlands and Mounts Bay Academy in Penzance and we also have a regular spot at Trevithick Day in Camborne.

Today, School of Rock Southwest is run by Director John & Manager Phil as equal partners. dBs music has been pivotal to its running, without them we simply we would not be around. So are we making a difference? Yes we are, there is simply nothing else like this available in Cornwall. We are completely self funding and run at a low budget to help young musicians have the chance to perform and write their own material without huge cost.
